16th July 2010
July 10th 2010, on a scorching hot Saturday morning, 9 Jolly Archers dragged themselves out of bed at an unholy hour for a weekend, and drove across the fens to take part in Fenland Archery Club’s 4th annual St Georges shoot. Our 10th Jolly Archer arrived later in the morning and we divided ourselves between the St George, Albion and
Windsor rounds. Well, only one of us braved the 100yard range but for the best of reasons as Mark Huggins brought home the
Gent’s recurve gold medal and overall championship winner with a score of 745. Five of us fellas and one lady, Maureen Edgar, competed for the
Albion recurve. Under the masterly guidance of our chairman, Steve King, three of us newbies to outdoor competition achieved a clean sweep of medals. Drew Clarke won Gold with a stunning personal best of 832, Adrian Wilkinson, Silver also with a PB scored 692 and Phillipe Masters took home the Bronze with 688. To our delight this secured the team trophy for the Gent’s
Albion and a further three gold medals for the, ‘merry’ or soon to be in the pub later, men. Brian Cracknell kept us company through out and kept our spirits up with his geordie banter as we wilted in temperatures of 31degrees.
Further down the shooting line, Shaun Jacobs and Peter Welsh tackled the
Windsor, accompanied by David Ash on barebow. Shaun’s bronze medal and PB of 726 encapsulates the whole concept of the word ‘chuffed’, (Shaun does ‘chuffed’ very well). The final medal was Gold for David Ash with a score of 509.
This was a wonderful summers day, and well roasted, we ten left the field with pride. The event was wonderfully hosted by the Fenland Club, who had the amazing foresight and common sense to have brought additional water supplies, however, nothing slakes the thirst like the pint in the pub on the way home.

On the weekend of 1st/2nd May, Paul Anthony attended Lilleshall for the Double FITA Star world record status shoot organised by The Walsall Company Of Archers. Paul finished 19th with a combined score of 2638 which included 125 tens and 41 'X's. Well done Paul. This was not the end of his achievement at this event though, Pauls scores of 1320 and 1318 added to the 1329 achieved earlier this season at the Kirby Muxloe FITA gives him the 'Master Bowman' status again this year.
